HULME ANALYSIS

Hulme is an inner city area and an electoral ward of the borough of Manchester, England.

Hulme forms the boundary between the affluent city centre and the traditional less affluent ward to the south. Hulme houses a very diverse range of people, typologies and tenures. The following pages aim to illustrate the housing of Hulme.

HULME HISTORY

Historically, Hulme has seen a great many changes to its urban pattern, specifically surrounding the controversial ‘crescents’. The demolition of the crescents allowed for the construction of major vehicular routes, serving as the main commuter roads into Manchester city centre from the south, to literally slice through the centre of Hulme, which is a serious physical barrier for both vehicles and pedestrians attempting to travel around local area.
